Madonna is making me sad
I just turned 40 and I’m looking for role models. It turns out Madonna isn’t going to fit the bill. Yes, she’s beautiful and strong and smart. But not smart enough to understand that (in the words of Julia Roberts) You Can’t OutKitten the Kittens
On her European tour she seems out to take Lady Gaga down a step by flashing boobs and ass, which no one is arguing look amazing.
Now since we’ve all seen her boobs and ass a million times, I can only assume that:
a) she can’t come up with anything new
b) she’s freaked out about getting older and desperate to prove her youth
c) she’s trying to outkitten Lady Gaga…a losing battle for sure
None of these options sit well. And they all make me sad. When I was a little kid I accidentally set my alarm clock for the wrong time and it came on in the middle of the night. I had it set to the local pop station and when it came on they happened to be playing “Borderline.” I remember getting up on my bed and dancing my heart out at 2am and thinking to myself, “I’ll never have this moment again.”
I’ll always love her, but she can’t be my role model for growing older if she refuses to do so.
Thank God for Tina Fey!

I agree. As I get older myself, I dig those who embrace getting older and see it as a new era, an era of continued growth, not a time to look back and hang on. I do wish I had the motivation and energy to keep myself in that kind of shape though!

dancing at 2am on your bed??
what a perfect memory.
i understand looking for role models and looking to act age appropriately,
but you’ve obviously already made a decision to not try to outkitten the kittens,
so i think you’d be safe to break out a 2am dance if you feel moved to.
that type of “who the heck cares?”-ness (within reason) in women older than me is what i end up looking up to.

Madonna makes me sad, too. I don’t know what’s worse, her scary arms, or the fact that she’s still walking around in her underwear.
As a 42-year-old who’s really bummed she’s 42, I hear you.

Does Madonna have a “No Fear” tattoo on her back?
